BURY RAPIDPLAY Tuesday, 23rd January

Club members found themselves joined by two visitors, as ex-member Roger Howley and Paul Doherty from Bolton turned up to enjoy an evening of blitz -speed chess. Both acquitted themselves well, although only club members were eligible for the Lodwig Gruchlik memorial trophy. At a speed of ten minutes each player per game it was possible to play six rounds in the contest, so that stamina as well as skill was needed.

The winner was new club member Stephen Stokes with a perfect score of 6 wins. His nearest challengers were Roger Howley and Jim Litherland, both with 4/6, followed by Paul Doherty on 3/6.Then came Jason Anderson and Steven Press with 2.5/6. An enterprising evening by junior Billy Anderson saw him win two early games to be up with the leaders, but then finding himself struggling against stronger opposition.

But the evening was well fought on all levels, and the trophy will be presented to Stephen at the club's AGM in May.
